People of the Old Testament
- God: The One behind every story in the Book.
- Adam: Made from dust and given the breath of life, he heard God ask, "Where art thou?"
- Eve: The first woman, who listened to the serpent and still heard a promise.
- Cain: The first brother — and the first warning about anger.
- Abel: He never speaks a word in Scripture — yet "he being dead yet speaketh".
- Seth: Born after Abel’s death, he was a fresh start, and in his son’s day people began to call on the LORD.
- Noah: He built a boat for a flood no one had seen.
- Shem: Noah’s son who came through the flood, honoured his father, and became the ancestor of Abraham.
- Ham: Noah’s son who came through the flood, whose sons became the peoples of Egypt, Canaan and beyond.
- Japheth: Noah’s son who honoured his father, and whose descendants spread to the coasts and islands.
- Abraham: Called to leave everything for a land he’d never seen.
- Sarah: She laughed at an impossible promise — then named her son "he laughs".
- Hagar: A runaway servant who gave God a name: "the God who sees me."
- Lot: He chose the best-looking land, and had to be dragged out of it.
- Ishmael: His name means "God hears," and in the wilderness, God did.
- Isaac: The long-awaited son whose name means "he laughs".
- Rebekah: She said "I will go" to a stranger’s land, and later steered her family’s blessing.
- Laban: Rebekah’s brother and Jacob’s uncle, who out-tricked the trickster.
- Esau: He traded his birthright for a bowl of stew, and later ran to hug the brother who cheated him.
- Jacob: He grabbed at blessings all his life, until he wrestled with God and limped away blessed.
- Leah: Less loved by her husband, she became the mother of priests and kings.
- Rachel: Jacob worked fourteen years to marry her, and she longed for children.
- Judah: He suggested selling Joseph, and later offered himself as a slave to save Benjamin.
- Joseph: Sold by his brothers, raised up in Egypt — and he forgave them.
- Benjamin: Jacob’s youngest son and Joseph’s only full brother, at the centre of the test that reunited a family.
- Job: He lost everything, argued with heaven, and met God in a whirlwind.
- Eliphaz: Job’s friend who came to comfort him, then insisted his suffering must be his own fault.
- Jochebed: The mother who hid baby Moses, set him afloat in a basket, and was paid to nurse her own son.
- Moses: Raised in a palace, called from a burning bush, sent to set a nation free.
- Pharaoh: The king of Egypt who asked "Who is the LORD?" and learned the answer through ten plagues.
- Aaron: Moses’ voice before Pharaoh, and the first high priest of Israel.
- Miriam: She watched over baby Moses, and led Israel in song by the sea.
- Caleb: "Give me this mountain," he said at 85, still trusting God.
- Balaam: Hired to curse Israel, he could only bless, after his donkey talked back.
- Balak: The king of Moab who hired a prophet to curse Israel, and heard him bless them three times.
- Joshua: "Be strong and of a good courage." He led Israel into the promised land.
- Rahab: An outsider in Jericho who trusted Israel’s God and ended up in Jesus’ family tree.
- Deborah: A prophetess who judged Israel from under a palm tree, and went to war when no one else would.
- Barak: The commander who wouldn’t go to battle without Deborah, and led Israel to victory over nine hundred iron chariots.
- Jael: The tent-dweller who ended Sisera’s twenty-year oppression, just as Deborah had foretold.
- Sisera: The Canaanite general whose nine hundred iron chariots terrorised Israel for twenty years.
- Joash: Gideon’s father, whose Baal altar his son tore down, and who then stood up for his son.
- Gideon: Called "mighty man of valour" while hiding in a winepress.
- Manoah: Samson’s father, who asked God to send the angel back so he could learn how to raise his son.
- Samson: Strength like no one else — and weaknesses like everyone else.
- Delilah: Paid to find the secret of Samson’s strength, she asked until he told her.
- Ruth: "Whither thou goest, I will go" — the outsider who chose loyalty.
- Naomi: She went out full and came home empty — but the story wasn’t over.
- Orpah: Naomi’s other daughter-in-law, who kissed her goodbye and went home, the road Ruth didn’t take.
- Boaz: A wealthy farmer whose kindness to a foreign widow changed history.
- Hannah: She poured out her soul to God, and gave back the child she prayed for.
- Elkanah: Hannah’s husband, who loved her deeply, and let her keep her promise to give Samuel to God.
- Peninnah: Elkanah’s other wife, who had children and taunted Hannah, who had none.
- Eli: He taught young Samuel to say, "Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth."
- Samuel: The boy who heard God call his name in the night.
- Saul: Israel’s first king — tall, chosen, and undone by jealousy.
- Jonathan: The prince who gave up a throne for his friend.
- Michal: She loved David and saved his life, then watched him dance and despised him.
- Jesse: He brought out seven sons for Samuel, and almost forgot the youngest.
- David: The youngest son nobody invited — chosen to be king.
- Goliath: The champion of Gath who defied an army — and met a shepherd.
- Nabal: A rich, rude sheep farmer whose name meant "fool," and whose wise wife saved his household.
- Abigail: With bread, wine and wise words, she stopped David from taking revenge.
- Mephibosheth: Lame and afraid, he was invited to eat at King David’s table for his father’s sake.
- Ziba: A servant of Saul’s family whose account of his master clashed with his master’s own.
- Nathan: He told a king a story about a lamb, then said, "Thou art the man."
- Bathsheba: Taken by a king and widowed by his order, she became the mother of Solomon.
- Uriah: One of David’s mighty men, whose loyalty shamed the king who wronged him.
- Absalom: He stole the hearts of Israel and rose against his father, who wept, "Would God I had died for thee."
- Joab: David’s fierce, loyal and ruthless commander, who served the king’s throne and often defied the king.
- Solomon: He asked God for wisdom, and still lost his way.
- Queen of Sheba: The queen who travelled from far away to test Solomon’s wisdom, and left praising his God.
- Ahab: He called Elijah the "troubler of Israel," and once, briefly, humbled himself.
- Jezebel: The queen who brought Baal worship to Israel and hunted God’s prophets.
- Naboth: The man who would not sell his family’s vineyard to King Ahab, and paid for it with his life.
- Micaiah: The lone prophet who told a king the truth when four hundred others told him what he wanted to hear.
- Elijah: He called down fire, then ran for his life. God met him in a whisper.
- Elisha: He asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, and saw the hills full of fire.
- Jehu: The furious charioteer anointed to end Ahab’s dynasty, zealous against Baal but not wholehearted for God.
- Naaman: A great general who almost walked away from his own healing because it was too simple.
- Amittai: Jonah’s father: named only twice in the Bible, from a Galilee village near Nazareth.
- Jonah: He ran from God, ended up inside a fish, and still argued at the end.
- Uzziah: A brilliant king who prospered while he sought God, until pride led him into the temple.
- Isaiah: He saw the Lord high and lifted up, and said, "Here am I; send me."
- Hezekiah: Surrounded by Assyria, he spread the enemy’s letter before God and prayed.
- Sennacherib: The Assyrian emperor who captured Judah’s cities and mocked its God, but never took Jerusalem.
- Josiah: King at eight, he heard the forgotten book of the law read aloud and tore his clothes.
- Huldah: The prophetess the king consulted when the lost book of the law was found.
- Jeremiah: Called as a young man, he warned Jerusalem for forty years and wept when no one listened.
- Baruch: Jeremiah’s faithful scribe, who wrote down God’s word, and wrote it again when the king burned it.
- Ezekiel: An exiled priest who saw God’s glory by a river in Babylon, and a valley of bones come to life.
- Daniel: Taken captive as a young man, and he never stopped praying.
- Shadrach: With his friends Meshach and Abednego, he told a king: "But if not… we will not serve thy gods."
- Meshach: One of the three friends who would not bow to the golden image, and walked unharmed in the furnace.
- Abednego: One of the three friends who said "But if not," and came out of the furnace without even the smell of fire.
- Nebuchadnezzar: The proudest king on earth, who ended up praising the King of heaven.
- Darius: The king who was tricked into sending Daniel to the lions, spent the night fasting, and ran to the den at dawn.
- Ahasuerus: The Persian emperor who made Esther his queen, and whose sleepless night turned the story around.
- Esther: An orphan turned queen, who risked her life "for such a time as this".
- Mordecai: He raised Esther, refused to bow, and asked, "Who knoweth…?"
- Haman: The proud official who plotted to destroy the Jews because one man wouldn’t bow, and fell into his own trap.
- Ezra: A scribe who set his heart to study God’s law, live it, and teach it.
- Artaxerxes: The Persian king who first halted Jerusalem’s rebuilding, then sent Ezra and Nehemiah to restore it.
- Nehemiah: He prayed before he spoke, and rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls in fifty-two days.
- Gabriel: The angel who stands in the presence of God, sent with the news that Jesus would be born.
People of the New Testament
- Zechariah: An old priest who doubted an angel, lost his voice, and found it again in praise.
- Elizabeth: Old and childless, she felt her baby leap for joy when Mary arrived.
- Mary: "Be it unto me according to thy word" — a yes that changed history.
- Joseph of Nazareth: Not a single word of his is recorded, yet every time God spoke, he obeyed.
- Herod the Great: The ruthless king of Judea who rebuilt the temple, and tried to destroy the newborn King.
- Simeon: He waited all his life for God’s promise, then held it in his arms.
- Anna: She prayed in the temple night and day for decades, then told everyone about the child.
- John the Baptist: A voice in the wilderness who said, "He must increase, but I must decrease."
- Herod Antipas: The ruler of Galilee who liked listening to John the Baptist, then had him killed, and met Jesus at his trial.
- Jesus: The one the whole story points to.
- Andrew: Every time we see him, he’s bringing someone to Jesus.
- Peter: He walked on water, sank, denied Jesus — and was trusted anyway.
- James: He asked for a seat in Jesus’ glory, and was the first apostle to give his life.
- John: A fiery fisherman called a "son of thunder," remembered for writing that "God is love."
- Matthew: A tax collector who got up from his booth when Jesus said, "Follow me."
- Nicodemus: A respected teacher who came to Jesus by night, and later came openly to bury him.
- The Samaritan woman: She came to draw water at noon, and left her water jar to tell her town about Jesus.
- Martha: Busy serving, she complained to Jesus, and later made one of the boldest confessions of faith.
- Mary of Bethany: She sat at Jesus’ feet to listen, wept at his feet in grief, and anointed his feet with perfume.
- Lazarus: Four days in the tomb, he walked out when Jesus called his name.
- Bartimaeus: Told to be quiet, he shouted louder, and Jesus stopped.
- Zacchaeus: A short man up a tree — and the day Jesus invited himself over.
- Judas Iscariot: One of the Twelve, he sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver and betrayed him with a kiss.
- Caiaphas: The high priest who said one man should die for the people, and unknowingly prophesied the cross.
- Pontius Pilate: He found no fault in Jesus, washed his hands, and sent him to be crucified.
- Barabbas: The prisoner the crowd chose to free instead of Jesus.
- Joseph of Arimathea: A secret disciple who stepped into the open to bury Jesus in his own new tomb.
- Mary Magdalene: She stayed at the cross, came to the tomb in the dark, and was the first to see the risen Jesus.
- Thomas: Remembered for doubting, he made the boldest confession in the Gospels.
- Stephen: Chosen to serve food to widows, he became the first to die for Jesus, forgiving as he fell.
- Philip: Sent to a desert road, he found a traveller reading Isaiah and told him about Jesus.
- Cornelius: A Roman soldier who prayed, and opened the door for the gospel to go to every nation.
- Barnabas: His name means "son of encouragement," and he gave Paul, and Mark, a second chance.
- John Mark: The young man who quit a mission trip, got a second chance, and became "profitable" to Paul.
- Silas: Paul’s companion who sang hymns at midnight in a Philippian prison.
- Paul: From hunting Christians to writing much of the New Testament.
- Lydia: A businesswoman by a river in Philippi whose heart the Lord opened.
- Priscilla: A tentmaker who, with her husband, risked her life for Paul and taught a famous preacher.
- Aquila: Priscilla’s husband: a tentmaker who worked beside Paul, taught Apollos, and opened his home to the church.
- Apollos: An eloquent preacher from Alexandria who humbly learned more, and became a great help to the churches.
- Eunice: Timothy’s mother, whose sincere faith, learned from her own mother, shaped a church leader.
- Timothy: Raised by his mother and grandmother on the Scriptures, he became Paul’s "dearly beloved son."
