Abel

He never speaks a word in Scripture — yet "he being dead yet speaketh".

Old Testament · Primeval history · Genesis, Matthew, Hebrews · Also known as Second son of Adam and Eve, "Righteous Abel"

About Abel

Abel, the second son of Adam and Eve, kept sheep. He brought God the firstborn of his flock, and God "had respect unto Abel and to his offering." Killed by his jealous brother, Abel is remembered in Hebrews as a man of faith whose example still speaks — and Jesus himself referred to "righteous Abel."

Abel has no recorded words in the whole Bible. Because of that, meetBible doesn’t put words in his mouth: questions about Abel are answered by a guide, from the text.

The story

A keeper of sheep

"Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground." The first two brothers in the Bible, with two different callings.

Genesis 4:1-2

The best of the flock

Abel "brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering." Hebrews says it was offered "by faith."

Genesis 4:3-4; Hebrews 11:4

Blood that cries out

In the field, his brother rose up against him. God told Cain: "The voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground." Even silenced, Abel was not forgotten.

Genesis 4:8-10

He yet speaketh

Thousands of years later, Hebrews says that through his faith "he being dead yet speaketh." Jesus spoke of "righteous Abel," and Hebrews compares Abel’s blood with the blood of Jesus, "that speaketh better things."

Hebrews 11:4; 12:24

Key moments

Questions about Abel

Why don’t we hear Abel speak?

Genesis never records a single word from Abel. That’s why this is a guide rather than a portrayal — inventing his voice would be adding to Scripture. Hebrews says something striking about that silence: through his faith, "he being dead yet speaketh."

Why did God accept Abel’s offering?

Genesis notes Abel brought "the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof" — the first and best. Hebrews explains: "By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain." The New Testament points to faith and righteousness, not just the type of gift.

Who talks about Abel later in the Bible?

Jesus spoke of "the blood of righteous Abel" in Matthew 23. Hebrews 11 lists Abel first in its roll of faith, and Hebrews 12 says Jesus’ blood "speaketh better things than that of Abel." 1 John contrasts Abel’s righteousness with Cain’s evil works.
